Elk Island Winery is named for the 1300 acre island in the James River, originally part of Thomas Jefferson’s Elk Hill farm, adjacent to our farm. Our passion for rural life, agriculture and our love of wine resulted in the planting of our five acre vineyard and Elk Island Winery, which opened in 2012. Our farm, Lower Byrd Farm, is situated at the confluence of Byrd Creek and the James River and grows row crop grains. Our six acres of vineyards are planted in Norton, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Merlot and Sagrantino along with a few other small plantings of miscellaneous white grapes.

A visit to our family winery reflects the fact that agriculture is a way of life and wine is about emotion, dreams and capturing those feelings inside a glass. Our winery specializes in Norton and vinifera varietals, while offering a broad range of wines to suit all tastes. We are committed to making great wine at affordable prices, and represent the best that Virginia wine has to offer. All of our grapes are from Virginia and 90% of them are grown in Goochland.
